Light art for cultural renewal at the Freising Diocesan Museum
After an extensive renovation, the Freising Diocesan Museum reopened its doors in 2022. With over 40,000 exhibits, it ranks among the world's most significant religious art collections. The goal was to create an open, modern museum experience through architectural transparency, forward-thinking exhibitions, and an innovative lighting solution that both captivates visitors and fulfills conservation requirements. Zumtobel, in collaboration with Typico, developed an impressive lighting concept.
Smart lighting for sensitive exhibits
The new lighting design supports the architectural concept of "open walls" through generous light ceilings, daylight entry, and targeted accent lighting. The central atrium was equipped with one of the world's largest combinations of natural and artificial lighting. The strategic use of light has created an inviting, sacred-like atmosphere that emotionally engages visitors while simultaneously protecting the delicate exhibits.
High-quality lighting technology for museum-grade illumination
Among others, the large-area CIELUMA luminous ceilings, SUPERSYSTEM II spotlights, PANOS evolution downlights, and the TECTON continuous-row lighting system were used. These products offer glare-free, uniform light, flexible accentuation, and maximum energy efficiency. The LED spotlights can be accurately aligned, while CIELUMA offers a daylight-like ambient lighting - perfect for delicate exhibits.
Intelligent lighting control and customised adjustment
With the LITENET control system, each lighting point can be individually customised – perfect for dynamic exhibitions. In addition, RESCLITE PRO safety luminaires and COMSIGN escape route signage ensure the highest safety standards. The custom-made luminous ceilings were accurately adapted to the partially historic, non-rectangular rooms. The combination of daylight-simulating LED technology, sustainability, and customisation makes this project a prime example of modern museum lighting.
