Future-oriented campus: lighting design for living, learning, and interaction.

The Johannes Kepler University Linz aims to create a campus that provides not only optimal learning conditions for students and faculty but also a space for interaction and community living. With projects like Kepler Hall and the Learning Center, the JKU is establishing new benchmarks in integrating modern architecture, functionality, and ambiance. So the requirements for the lighting solution were equally as high: Efficient lighting, architectural integration, high light quality, and flexibility were the focus — both in the prestigious Kepler Hall and the newly redesigned library.

High-quality LED products with a focus on performance and durability

Among other things, custom-made SLOTLIGHT light lines with a luminous flux of up to 18,300 lumens were used in Kepler Hall — ball-proof, dimmable, and aesthetically integrated into the ceiling structure. In the Learning Center, MIREL luminaires on TECTON trunking rails with 3,700 lumens and UGR < 19 ensured uniform illumination with minimal glare. NIGHTSIGHT from Thorn took charge of the external presentation: The steel façade was impressively showcased through precise light distribution – without any light scatter or harsh shadows. All deployed products are characterized by energy efficiency, long lifespan, and low maintenance requirements.

Sustainability and individualization as guiding principles

A completely customised lighting solution was implemented specifically for Kepler Hall: The light line was accurately adjusted to the architectural louvre dimensions and equipped with high mechanical durability. In the Learning Center, the focus was also on sustainable solutions: LED technology saves energy, reduces maintenance costs, and simultaneously provides maximum visual comfort. The entire lighting design focused on long-term use, design integration, and the goal of creating an inspiring, sustainable learning and living environment for future generations.

Individual lighting control for any situation

To ensure perfect lighting in every situation, the intelligent ZBOX lighting management system has been used. It enables users to create personalized lighting atmospheres from welcoming brightness when entering, to subtle lighting for watching TV, to focused illumination for working. Four CIRCLE control units ensure intuitive operation in every area of the suite.
