How biological light effects are planned

The biological effect of light depends on several factors: illuminance, spectrum, duration of exposure, timing, spatial distribution and previous exposure to light. Morning light has a particularly strong influence on synchronising the internal clock, while lower intensities and warmer light in the evening can support relaxation.

Intensity

Higher irradiance can increase biological effectiveness. Lower irradiance reduces the effect.

Timing

Light in the morning is most effective for supporting the internal clock. Afternoon light generally has a lower synchronising effect.

Distribution

Wide-area light supports biological effectiveness more strongly than narrow, selective spotlighting.

Spectrum

A higher blue component can increase biological activation. Reduced blue components are better suited to calmer lighting situations.
