Elegant lighting solution for a landmark in the heart of Reading
As part of the comprehensive renovation of the "The Aquarium 2" office complex in Reading, UK, a lighting solution was sought that would satisfy the highest functional and aesthetic standards. The listed building required a sensitive lighting design that fulfills modern workplace requirements while preserving its architectural character. The objective was to develop a high-quality, efficient, and atmospheric lighting concept for both public-facing areas like the reception and for open office spaces and stairwells.
Glare-free, efficient lighting in harmony with the structure of listed buildings
In close collaboration with DWP Associates (architecture) and KNG Building Services (technology), the Zumtobel design team developed a modern lighting concept that combines energy efficiency with high-quality light quality. The result: glare-free lighting for focused work, uniform illumination for a pleasant spatial effect, and harmonious integration into high-quality interior architecture. In the heritage-protected area in particular, it was crucial to respectfully highlight the historical substance using indirect lighting and a subtle design.
Innovative lighting solutions with proven Zumtobel products
The MIREL evolution pendant luminaires were used, offering optimal conditions for VDU workstations due to their clear design, UGR < 16, and high luminous efficacy. The ONDARIA LED ceiling lights in black create elegant accents in the reception area while also providing acoustic optimization. In stairwells and on intermediate floors, the CLARIS evolution with MPO+ micro-pyramidal optics provides visual depth and efficient lighting. All of the products used offer optimal energy efficiency — up to 150 lm/W — while maintaining a stylish design.
Sustainability meets technology – efficient solutions without compromise
A customised special solution was not necessary for the project, as the products used already offer maximum flexibility and technical sophistication. Sustainability remained the focus: Through modern LED technology, long lifespan, and low maintenance costs, the Zumtobel lighting solution not only reduces power consumption but also lowers operational costs in the long run. The new lighting installation therefore not only enhances visual quality but also promotes environmental responsibility.
