Light as a connecting element in educational construction

The FHNW Campus Muttenz is a 65-metre high cube that accommodates approximately 4,500 students and staff. The challenge was to create a lighting solution that seamlessly integrated into the austere architecture while simultaneously fulfilling functional requirements. The goal was to develop a lighting concept that highlighted the building's aesthetics while offering optimal conditions for learning and working.

Custom light integration using unique special luminaires

In collaboration with the lighting designers from Reflexion, Zumtobel developed the FREELINE special luminaire, specifically designed to meet the requirements of the FHNW Campus. The luminaire was designed to integrate seamlessly between the ribs of the concrete ceilings, ensuring consistent light distribution. This integration results in a harmonious interplay of light and architecture.

Precise light direction with the FREELINE luminaire

The FREELINE luminaire is made of a slim aluminium U-profile with a PMMA cover and an external control gear, allowing for a miniaturised design. It features a primary optic that concentrates the light and a secondary microprismatic optic (MPO) for precise light direction and glare-free illumination. With over 13 kilometres of installed FREELINE luminaires, a continuous lighting structure was created that is both functional and aesthetically convincing.

Technology & Sustainability: Efficiency through intelligent planning

The FREELINE luminaires have been equipped with energy-efficient LED technology and integrated into an intelligent lighting management system that automatically adjusts to daylight conditions. The precise light direction and high energy efficiency support the sustainability goals of the project and contribute to the creation of a healthy learning and working environment.

"The collaboration with Zumtobel was both a creative and technical iteration."
