Art in the best light: Project challenges

The new extension to the Kunsthaus Zürich, designed by renowned architect David Chipperfield, offers 5,000 square metres of additional exhibition space. The main challenge: lighting that optimally highlights artworks and flexibly adapts to changing exhibitions. Natural daylight needed to be harmoniously integrated with artificial lighting.

Customised lighting solution: Harmony of base and accent lighting.

To showcase the artworks in the best possible light, a well-thought-out lighting concept was developed by matí AG. Zumtobel provided a combination of general and accent lighting: The TECTON continuous-row systems ensures uniform ambient brightness, while the innovative ARCOS III spotlights with zoom focus, create targeted highlights. This flexible lighting solution allows for individual customisation to suit different art styles.

Sustainability and Innovation: Lighting Designs for the Future

In addition to offering high flexibility, the lighting concept emphasises sustainability: The energy-efficient LED systems minimise electricity consumption and help to lower maintenance costs. The intelligent daylight control system on the second floor maximises the use of natural light, creating a comfortable lighting environment that adapts seamlessly to the changing weather conditions. So everyone can experience the art in its full splendour.

Traditional technology meets modern LEDs

Zumtobel developed a special luminaire for the foyer and the cloakroom in front of the concert hall. This is a hybrid luminaire with a handmade fluorescent tube and an RGB LED module. Via a DALI interface, both components can be controlled independently of the other. While the conventional fluorescent tube provides general lighting, the LED module enables the desired colour to be set depending on the event, creating an emotional effect lighting in the space.
A spacious room with a ceiling of wooden beams, highlighted by slim LED lights. The golden walls and wooden floor create a warm and elegant atmosphere.

"Developing this luminaire required significant effort — both from Zumtobel and us — but our collaboration yielded excellent results."
