Elegant presentation of historical masterpieces - The Kunstkammer Vienna in a new light

As part of the comprehensive redesign of the Kunstkammer Vienna at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the goal was to present the centuries-old collection from the Habsburg era in a way that was not just impressive, but also in line with conservation efforts. The requirements were high: over 2,200 historical art exhibits, including delicate materials such as ivory, amber, and gold, were to be impressively showcased, under consideration of the latest museum technology standards. A lighting solution was required that met the highest functional and aesthetic standards.

Innovative products for impactful and protected lighting

The centrepiece of the lighting concept is the STARBRICK light object, developed together with Elíasson, serving both as an artwork and a luminaire. The solution is enhanced by SUPERSYSTEM individual spotlights, which ensure precise lighting, and the PANOS infinity module, which aids in indirect room illumination. The combination of these systems allows for flexible light control that perfectly adapts to the various materials and shapes of the exhibits.

Sustainability meets high-end technology

A custom-made solution like the STARBRICK underscores the technological ambition of the project – yet sustainability was also a priority: The LED systems employed are especially energy-efficient, long-lasting, and require minimal maintenance. The reduced heat increase in the display cases protects sensitive art objects and simultaneously lowers operating costs. With this solution, Zumtobel unites technology, aesthetics, and sustainability at the highest level – establishing a forward-thinking model for modern museum lighting.

"It was clear to us that we wanted to work only with the best partners for the best collection in the world."
