Europe's most modern opera house in the best light

The Linz Music Theatre, one of the most modern opera houses in Europe, impresses not only with its artistic diversity but also with its architectural and technical excellence. The new building, designed by Terry Pawson Architects, offers space for opera, drama, dance, musicals, and youth theatre. A multifunctional cultural complex was developed over an area of 55,000 m², setting new benchmarks in theatre construction with its expansive stage, 1,200 seats, and state-of-the-art facilities. The major challenge: a comprehensive lighting solution that impresses both in design and operates efficiently and sustainably.

Energy-efficient lighting management with LUXMATE LITENET

Zumtobel developed an intelligent lighting concept that seamlessly integrates into the sustainable architecture of the low-energy building. The central lighting management system LUXMATE Litenet automatically controls lighting, emergency lighting, and sun shading based on daylight. Daylight sensors, motion detectors, and automated blind controls add only as much artificial light to each room as is truly necessary. The result: highest energy efficiency with optimal visual comfort – a solution that saves up to 50% of energy costs.

Versatile luminaires for spaces with specific requirements

Specially attuned luminaires were used for various functional areas in the music theatre: PANOS Q downlights provide uniform lighting for the corridors, ARCOS spotlights highlight artworks without UV and IR exposure, and in the restaurant, SCONFINE Sfera with its bronze-coloured luminaire body creates a warm ambiance. In the rehearsal rooms, Slotlight II light lines provide precise lighting conditions, while CARDAN LED spotlights create pinpoint accents. Offices benefit from MILDES LICHT V and ECOOS pendant luminaires, which create a natural and glare-free working atmosphere.

Safety, sustainability and visibility combined

Over 1,500 safety and escape sign luminaires - including RESCLITE and CUBESIGN - ensure maximum safety. These are integrated into an autonomous power grid and can be fully controlled via DALI and LUXMATE. For the exterior, PAN and ELEVO LED spotlights were employed to strikingly highlight the building. The entire lighting solution offers impressive durability, low maintenance requirements, and high energy efficiency — a successful interplay of technology, design, and sustainability.
