Historic church shines in a new light
The old Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Schenna, South Tyrol, Austria, was gently and stylishly staged with a modern lighting solution from Zumtobel. The aim of the project was to maintain the sacred spatial ambiance, while providing precise lighting for artworks, the altar area and architectural details, without impacting the historical integrity. The challenge was combining heritage conservation, aesthetics and modern technology.
Lighting design with intuition for sacred spaces
In collaboration with lighting solution partner Michael Wolf, a finely attuned lighting design was created to enhance the spiritual atmosphere of the church. Through targeted accentuation and glare-free general lighting, a harmonious lighting atmosphere was achieved – suitable for liturgical purposes as well as guided tours for visitors or quiet contemplation. The discreetly installed luminaires integrate seamlessly into the historic building structure, providing a perfect photometric and atmospheric effect.
SUPERSYSTEM: Precise light quality for the highest standards
The flexible SUPERSYSTEM LED lighting system from Zumtobel was deployed, impressing with its minimalist design, high precision and excellent colour rendering. The modular spotlights allow for precise lighting control for altars, artworks and wall surfaces – with minimal disruption to the building structure. The system also offers various beam angles and dimmable light sources, and has been accurately attuned to the requirements of the sacred space.
Technology meets tradition – gentle and sustainable
A custom solution wasn't needed — however, the emphasis was clearly on sustainability: The new LED lighting significantly reduces power consumption and minimises maintenance effort, thanks to long-lasting components. Precise light direction also prevents light pollution, which is a crucial aspect particularly in heritage-protected buildings. SUPERSYSTEM successfully bridges the gap between cutting-edge technology and venerable tradition.
