Learning architecture reimagined: Light as a symbol of education and the future

The new university centre at Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín represents innovation, clarity, and a focus on the future. The structure integrates reading rooms, archives, and seminar rooms into two crescent-shaped units, linked by an atrium filled with natural light. The goal of the project was to create an open, functional, and inspiring learning environment that pays tribute to the legacy of its visionary namesake, Tomáš Baťa. Functionality and aesthetics should be noticeable in every detail - especially in lighting design.

Clear lines, clear vision: lighting solution as an integral design component

Eva Jiřičná's architectural signature, marked by transparency, structure, and lightness, is mirrored in the lighting design. The lighting was not intended as an addition, but was integrated as a key design element. The atrium is highlighted by a 54-metre-long, continuous lighting strip system that provides both direct and indirect lighting. This creates a uniform, warm lighting ambiance that highlights the open spatial feeling and facilitates learning.

SLOTLIGHT, CLARIS II and MIREL II: Light quality at the highest level

High-quality lighting solutions such as SLOTLIGHT, CLARIS II, and MIREL II were employed—products distinguished by a clear design, glare-free illumination, and high efficiency. The CLARIS II, with its serene, geometric design, fits perfectly into educational settings and impresses with outstanding light distribution. MIREL II ensures uniform, eye-friendly lighting with minimal glare in work and reading areas – ideal for focused tasks.

Lighting technology meets sustainability: efficiency in every dimension

Even though no tailored special solution was necessary, sustainability was the focus. The luminaires used are energy-efficient, durable, and low-maintenance – a benefit for both the environment and operational costs. Through indirect lighting guidance, targeted light distribution, and integrated systems for daylight utilisation, energy is saved without compromising on light quality. A successful example of how well-conceived lighting technology unites design, function, and sustainability.

The lighting solution integrates seamlessly into our architectural concept - functional, efficient, and of high design quality. It supports our vision of a forward-thinking learning environment."
