Focus on healing: Architecture and lighting design at UKE Hamburg

The University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf combines modern medicine with a therapeutic environment. To bring a clinic into existence that meets the highest requirements of both medical and design aspects was the goal of the project. The particular challenge was to combine functionality, easy walking distances, and technical efficiency with an atmosphere that actively supports the physical recovery of patients. Light played a central role as an emotional and functional design element.

Improving patient well-being through an intelligent lighting concept

Zumtobel developed a customised lighting concept that specifically improves the well-being of patients. In the patient rooms, an innovative lighting system allows for separate control of room, reading, and night lighting. This creates a cosy atmosphere that reduces stress and supports relaxation. The lighting design also supports orientation in publicly accessible areas like the hospital's "Boulevard" and fosters a sense of normality in the daily hospital environment.

Efficient products with emotional impact

Among other luminaires being used, the linear CLARIS stands out due to the homogeneous illumination and clear design. Zumtobel's flexible supply system integrates electricity, gas, communication, and lighting into an elegant, functional furniture module. Technical components are discreetly hidden - for minimal visual disturbance and a feeling comfort and security in the room.

Sustainable technology meets Human Centric Lighting

Although no individual customisation was necessary, there was a strong focus on sustainability and the emotional impact of lighting. Human Centric Lighting (HCL) was specifically implemented to positively affect the well-being, circadian rhythms, and mood of the patients. The lighting solutions are energy-efficient and resource-saving — evidence of how modern technology and humanity can go hand in hand in healthcare.

"Thanks to Zumtobel's tailor-made lighting solutions, we were able to create an atmosphere that is not only functional, but also actively contributes to the recovery of our patients."
